WASHINGTON DC The Trial Lawyers for Public Justice Foundation has named Grove Hill, Alabama attorney Gil Gilmore as one of 37 lawyers in six exceptional cases as finalists for the 2004 Trial Lawyer of the Year Award.The Finalists were nominated for their committed work in cases addressing a broad range of social issues, including fighting corporate fraud, protecting Hispanic rancher's rights, freeing the innocent, battling credit discrimination, holding gun makers accountable, and battling bank fraud.The TLPJ Foundation presents this award to the trial attorney or attorneys who have made the greatest contributions to the public interest by trying r settling a precedent-setting case between April 1, 2003 and April 1, 2004.Finalists and recipients exemplify how trial lawyers use their skills and determinations to create a more just society.The winner will be announced on July 6 at the TLPJ Foundation's 22nd Annual Gala and Awards dinner at the Westin Copley Place in Boston.Gilmore was one of several attorneys who battled against General Motors Acceptance Corporation for more than six years, winning a groundbreaking settlement in Coleman v. GMAC, a nationwide class action that transformed the way in which car purchases are financed in this country and exposed discriminatory auto financing practices that had operated secretly for over 75 years and had resulted in higher-interest car loans for minority car buyers.He is the son of Mrs. Vivian Gilmore, of Grove Hill, and the brother of attorney Wylynn Gilmore-Phillippi. His aunt is Mirian Heaton, of Butler.
